Cubby Solution

If floor space is limited, bring storage off the floor and onto a desk. Place a small bookcase on top of a desk, which will give you a space to store supplies at your fingertips.

Easy Office Filing

Turn an existing dresser or other unit with deep drawers into a file cabinet with one simple addition. Install adjustable hanging file frames (available at office supply stores) in the drawers and develop a filing system with tabbed hanging folders.

Hidden Office

Turn storage upside down with an inventive way to use kitchen cabinets. Hang a cabinet horizontally and attach piano hinges to the doors so it can open to become a mini desk area. When not in use, the door can simply be closed to conceal the work area and maintain a sleek appearance.

A Place to Create

If your office space is used for creative endeavors, such as scrapbooking and crafting, incorporate storage around your work space and keep all supplies at your fingertips. This desk area has an abundance of drawers, plus at-your-fingertips supply cups along the back of the desk. Achieve this functionality by drilling large holes the size of silverware cups into a desktop, dropping the cups into the holes, and filling them with scissors, markers, and more.

Collaborative Space

Do you need an office for more than one person? Use a dining table as a desk and place it perpendicular to a wall so several people can sit at the table at once. This table bumps up against a wall of built-ins, which add storage. A large bookcase also works wonders for an office setup like this.

Office with a View

Bump a desk up against a window with a deep window sill and use the sill as an improvised shelf for baskets and boxes. Plus, placing a desk near a window provides plenty of natural light.

Smarter Office Storage

In a small space, take office storage to the walls to keep work surfaces clutter-free. In this space, cubbies were mounted to the wall and magazine holders were screwed into the bottom of the cubbies for an innovative mail sorter. For an easy and affordable work surface, transform a slab door into a desktop by mounting it to a wall and placing bookcases or file cabinets beneath it for support.

Kitchen Office

A small desk tucked into a kitchen is suited for many tasks, such as doing homework or jotting down a grocery list. Incorporate a few drawers and cubbies to maximize the space's storage capacity.

Create a corner office at home by zoning a section of a larger room (such as a living room or family room) as a work zone. Behind this desk, a large bookcase fulfills all the storage needs of this work area in one simple system. For more storage, hang floating shelves along the wall. This 20,000 square foot film production facility inhabits two 1940s masonry warehouse bays, separated by a bearing wall that allowed very limited open passage between the spaces.

We were charged with designing a dynamic work environment with administrative and technical wings that include offices, workshops, editing rooms, equipment cage and long sight lines for camera staging.

We introduced a circular conference room that becomes the vortex of the environment. Designing he Tokyo office of multinational recruitment specialists CDS was an opportunity to renew and maximize the value of their existing two-story premises. After appraising a full range of space use options, BAKOKO transformed the second floor into an efficient and modern workplace with a sleek and attractive facility for meetings and interviews below. The project was phased across the various floors of the building to mitigate disruption to the company's day-to-day operations.

CDS’s globally diverse workforce challenged us to create a more collaborative work space straddling Western and Japanese office cultures. As is typical in Japan, staff work long hours at their desks, but they are highly engaged amongst their specialist teams. We challenged our client to break free their old cubicle culture by creating greater transparency. At 5,300sqm the pair of football pitch-sized floor plates in Canary Wharf required a dynamic solution which was able to address problems with navigation as well as overcoming some of the deepest plans in Europe.

Having moved from Central London 10 years earlier, Ogilvy & Mather's current layout had developed in an ad-hoc manner resulting in highly segregated departments linked by unintelligible circulation, leaving staff inclined to stay near their desk rather than venture into 'alien' territory.....more

This internationally-renowned design firm relocated from their suburban Evanston offices to the West Loop of Chicago. We designed a space well-suited to the collaborative, unscripted, non-linear work style and culture of IDEO. Within this raw, flexible loft space, we built project rooms with operable walls allowing individual teams to modify the space for their specific project needs. A client-facing conferencing floor, ideal for confidential meetings, is on a separate floor. Also incorporated into the space is a rooftop addition and a fully accessible, structurally independent roofdeck that is perfect for outdoor project work and entertaining. IDEO also required wood, metal, electrical and paint shops for mock-ups and models necessary for their project work. In addition to meeting the design challenges of a moveable wall solution and a rooftop addition, this project is on track for LEED CI 2.0 Silver certification.....more

A single storey extension to a sawmill in the east end of Glasgow.
Following a fire, which destroyed the public face of the building, NORD were approached to design a replacement showroom and office.
The single storey timber structure is constructed entirely from material sourced within the adjacent warehouse. Located within the Lowry Hotel, Salford, the proposal creates 988m 2 of office accommodation on three levels. The basement office consists of a linear open plan office arrangement with staff and WC facilities located parallel to this space. The ground floor office is divided into three distinct zones, with the creation of a new mezzanine deck, which provides an additional third level of office accommodation above. Behind the new façade, public sales and reception spaces provide a frontage to the river and public domain. Behind these spaces the mezzanine runs centrally along the spine of the existing space, creating semi-public meeting spaces underneath the deck. This central spine of accommodation in turn screens private office space to the rear. It is also the services conduit for the whole, thereby maximising flexibility within the offices......more

The large summer banquet terrace is to be glazed and extended into the current VIP room. Thus we formed an inner interior winter garden, where a spatial ribbon carries the troughs and baskets with lush tropical greenery, wherefrom one can enjoy a magnificent view of the city centre. Besides the vertical executive business and club rooms it also represents the most attractive interior space in the CCIS. Spread over five floors of an existing office building in South London, the client wanted a design solution to harmonise the office interiors, developing a sense of corporate identity throughout, while keeping this within a strict budget.

The design for the Education Executive Agency and Tax Office building, accommodating 2,500 employees, reflects and caters for the separate identities of both user groups, whilst simultaneously creating synergy by means of shared use of secondary spaces – among which underground parking facilities, public gardens, a central hall and a pavilion for commercial functions. The aerodynamic form of the building has been achieved as the result of extensive sun and wind studies. The terraces, rounded corners and façade design guarantee minimum disruption to the microclimate of the surrounding urban green space, known as the ‘Sterrenbos’, whilst integrating sun shading, wind regulation, daylight penetration and construction in one concept, with the result that both material and energy use are minimised........more

The National Audit Office (NAO) occupies a Grade II listed 1930s building which was originally Airways House, built as a London terminal, close to Victoria Station. Extended in the 1950s (by tp bennett) and further refurbished in the 1980s for the NAO, the building was again comprehensively refurbished to provide office space for 850 staff, a meeting and training suite, business lounge, fitness suite and new restaurant. The restaurant, located on the ground floor, provides an alternative environment for its staff to come together away from the office floors that can be utilised throughout the day. Statement feature lights and vibrantly coloured perspex create a striking environment for staff to enjoy a variety of food options.........more
